Forgive my late response. I've been working on switching from Firefox to Goggle Chrome etc.. because Firefox 7 has really played havoc with my entire system. Not being a techie - hasn't helped.

I hate to tell you this - re: Only bad news etc.. It sure is: I've been looking through the Re-written 'laws of Quebec' that not one of us as far as I know - even knew were enacted, same with most of our Federal Laws: but these are 'Public Laws' in particular 'Public Laws that 'diminish the quality of our lives - remove rights etc..': that gain, according to ALL Our Constitutional Statutes Of Law Making Regulations' -- may NOT be introduced, amended etc... without Our Full Prior Knowledge & Our Full significant majority Votes!! Try getting help from our supposed Government Services - both Federal & Provincial & Municipal etc.. It's an 'Alice In Wonderland' experience that 99% of the time results in "Nothing"! And of course most people just give up - because they just don't have the time - nor any energy left - to get even the most simple answers to their questions for help! Will try to find the time to post an article about - how most of our access to Federal Help & Federal Departments, (like Health - Justice - Human Rights etc...) are NO LONGER AVAILABLE TO CANADIANS WHO LIVE IN QUEBECK!) Am trying to find out when - how and why OUR RIGHTS & FREEDOMS were handed over to the 75? politicians - writing illegal laws in Quebeck?

Did you see the incident with the black faced students frosh week event? This incident is evidence of the total isolation of the French Quebec youth to the world outside their French bubble. The fact that these students did not even understand that painting themselves black and associating blacks with monkeys is racism at its worst from the 1930-60’s era, indicates their world view does not include an educating awareness of racism, discrimination, intolerance and political correctness. Can you believe the scandal that is going on in the Quebec government and Charest wants to gloss it all over again. He continues to refuse a public inquiry even despite the scathing report of the blatant corruption noted in the Anti-corruption team with Jacques Duchesneau as head of the squad. I hope these cops, investigators do not quit. We need them to continue to find the evidence to put these cons in jail. The current evidence of wrong doing is the reason why the “powerful players” are “undercutting the squad”. We as citizens should do everything in our power to let these cops, who are fighting the corruption, know that we support them in their fight and to please stand firm through the storm and not quit. If they quit, the cons win. If organized crime wins, then we citizens continue to lose again and again for decades more. How much more can we afford to pay in increased taxes to support these corrupt individuals, who are siphoning money from the government for the various construction projects? The laws are there for a reason and no government official should be above the law. When we have a politician shoving the evidence under the rug and refuses further investigation of a public inquiry, then he is an accessory to the crime. He should be kicked out of office. We should not have to wait until 2013 to kick out Charest. His continual refusal to hold a public inquiry indicates he no longer works for the best interest of the people of Quebec.

Why have a country with two official languages, but enforce both languages only in Quebec, (example road signs, although now they managed to have places with only french signs, good on them).

Quebec french school has a very strong english program implemented from elementary through high-school. While english schools on the west coast have little obligatory french courses. How can you call Canada a bilingual country when most of it's country cant speak french. I think Quebec is it's own distinct society and they should maintain their culture however they can. It's funny how many complain about the unfairness towards the english in quebec, I was english in Quebec and learned french and received lots of respect for practicing my french. Now I can understand, why Quebec needs to separate from selfish conservative Canada

Oh my Phracking GOD, Dan Veniez, the Liberal Candidate seems to have swallowed the revisionist history Kool-aid with respect what has happened in the past generation. He has moved to BC and brain-washed himself into forgetting what happened, and is still going on today – actually it has gotten worse in the past two years particularly (as racism usually does during a recession, and subsequent struggle for reduced resources). Just listen to what PQ chief ‘swear allegiance to the FR language’ Pauline Marois was ranting about the other day – she wants a battle (!!!) o keep [discriminatory] Bill 104 in place, which was struck down as unconstitutional last year by the Supreme Court of Canada (which has several Francophones, thus nobody can claim it was a EN-Canada only decision).
I am now considered an extremist, and frankly I do not care, I have been places and been deep into the QC government (as has Tony K. very well) – dans le guelle du lion on peut le dire. How many Anglophones were working at the Caisse de Dépôt in 2008 before the crisis: perhaps 6 or 7 out of about 900 employees and consultants? We are over a Million around Montreal, yet only that few were allowed in the Caisse to work…
For the longest time, I was telling myself that it was perhaps something I did - but in the end (8 mths), I had documented every unwanted comment, every bit of verbal harassment, all the 'gestes', the access denied to do my job, the cut-offs while in meetings when referring to compliance with the law by Stephen Mandeville (early July 2008 departmental meeting) - and after departing the CDPQ, I filed complaints with many authorities, even the SQ. When the QC Human Rights Commission itself validated my complaint, after the six months it took for the Working Standards Commission (cnt.gouv.qc.ca) to validate also my psychological harassment complaint, I knew that something was seriously wrong with this province (as if all the rampant corruption wasn’t obvious anyway).
As a person with French ancestry on one side of the family, that continues to speak French generation after generation for 1300 years since our invasion of France from Denmark (Norman conquest started with Normandy, before ENGLAND), and having been spat in my direction for my first name being ‘Hugo’ by BC’s rednecks who have much disdain for Francophones (resentment related to repetitive attempts at separation). The Rednecks simply stop at (from my experience) unwanted gestures such as just described, and never stopped me from doing my work or affected my job. In Quebec, and at the Caisse, I was harassed multiple times, and then had my job taken away outright for producing a report that clearly indicated an Internal Audit Failure. That report is now currently under publication ban, but eventually I will seek to have it released, once progress is made with respect to my status as Employee over Contractor at the LaCaisse.com
I would sincerely like to see Dan’s reaction to my very recent story of racism within the heart of QC govt, and how he thinks the comment that I received on September 9th, 2008 on the seventh floor of the CDP Capitol building on 1000 place Riopelle, Montrea: ‘Tu vois, c’est facile à mettre dehors les Anglais’ by Yves Roy, and confirmed by the Vice President Rodrigue Lussier of the Plateformes Analytiques deparment at the time ‘Oui, ils [les Anglais] sont faciles,’ Both men are no longer at the CDP, no surprise there. That's one of the most frightening things I've ever read. I'm on a completely different planet than this guy.

When I grew up (I was born in 1955) in Montreal (Snowden, Cote des Neiges, and St. Laurent areas) francophones, allophones, and anglophones all lived peacefully. It is only with the start of the language legislation (Bill 22) in 1974 that the Two Solitudes really withdrew into their own camps.

I wonder where Dan was when Bill 101 was passed in 1977 and it seemed as though every third house in anglo neighbourhoods had "for sale" signs. Prior to this, we had freedom of choice in language of education; now we have segregation of children according to what certification their parents have with the right being handed down from generation to generation.

And this is what Dan prefers?

I am always amused when aboriginal people are invoked in comparison with Quebecers or as a justification for recognizing Quebec as a "nation within...Canada".

Firstly, Mr. Ignatieff's statement above is factually at odds with what he and the members of his party and the rest of Parliament recognized in that infamous resolution that they passed. The resolution recognized the "people" of Quebec as forming a nation within Canada, not the entity of the province of Quebec as forming a nation with Canada, as he writes as quoted above.

Here is the wording of the resolution:

"That this House recognizes that the Québécois form a nation within a united Canada."

A provincial entity and a people within that entity are two separate and different considerations.

What Mr. Ignatieff -- and, by extension, Mr. Veniez -- again fails to acknowledge is the existence of another "people" in Quebec: Canadian people.

Specifically, I refer to what can arguably be referred to as the most loyal Canadian people in Quebec: the anglophone and ethnic peoples who, first and foremost, recognize themselves as Canadians, not Quebecers...a people who, on two occasions, "saved" Canada by voting "no" in independence referendums by tallies of 99% (that's the conclusion of demographic experts, not myself). Without this loyal vote of the non-francophones, the "yes" side would have won in both 1980 and 1995.

Note that the reward that the non-francophones received for their loyalty to Canada was to be spat upon by Canada.

More importantly, the invocation of aboriginal peoples in this equation must necessarily bring up the special constitutional and legal arrangements for aboriginals, such as Canada's Indian Act.

The Indian Act is a race law. And, again, this is not me making this observation but the Supreme Court of Canada and a bevy of legal and academic scolars. Two separate and distinct sets of human rights are created by virtue of the Indian Act and inequality results from this race law.

But the coupling with Quebec is appropriate because the hate law/race law Bill 101 does the same thing: divide Quebecers into two separate and distinct civil rights categories.

This is created as a result of Bill 101's language of education provisions, working in conjunction with the horrible section 23 of Canada's so-called Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

In conclusion: Mr. Veniez's wide-eyed love of of an allegedly harmonious and tolerant Canada as envisioned by Michael Ignatieff is one that ignores and snubs its nose at those values most cherished in free and democratic societies: equality; protection from the tyranny of the majority; freedom of speech, to name but a few. It is time for leadership in Canada to stop spewing the same pap that we are continually fed...propaganda that blindly ignores Quebec's blatant violation of human rights (aided, abetted, and enabled by the Parliament of Canada) because it is so eager to maintain Quebec within Canada.

Canada is a wonderful concept. But there are other concepts that are more important and more wonderful...and should take priority over Canadian unity. One of those concepts is individual rights.

It is high time that individual rights take precedence over Canadian unity rather than the other way around.

PART I

My first impression from Dan Veniez's letter to Didi is that it is a credit to him that he took the time and effort to write such a detailed and heartfelt response. Kudos to him.

I do, however, have a few significant differences of opinion which I would like to express:

1)Quoting Michael Ignatieff, Dan writes:

"(Quebec) entered the federation on the strict understanding that its distinguishing features would receive special protection in the new federal government of Canada."

Quite true.

However, what seems to always be overlooked when the special constitutional arrangements made for Quebec are brought up is that, equally important, there were special arrangements for its minority population. Part of the "deal" that is Confederation is that if the newly created provincial legislature of Quebec was to ever violate the rights and freedoms of individuals or the minority community of Quebec that the central government(i.e., federal government in Ottawa) would step in a protect the minority by virtue of its veto power.

This veto power is found in numerous constitutional provisions: disallowance, reservation, the remedial educational powers of sections 93(3) and (4) of the BNA Act, the declarative power, all modes of taxation. In addition, other provisions of the BNA Act were included to protect minority electoral ridings -- both provicially and federally -- from encroachment by the majority.

The simple truth is that these powers were never, ever used by the central government to protect the minority non-francophone population of Quebec when human rights-violating and minority rights-violating legislation -- starting with Bill 22 and then continuing with Bill 101 and other legislation through the years -- was passed by the Quebec National Assembly.

Nor were these powers ever used to protect francophone minorities in other provinces.

So, yes, Mr. Veniez, by all means let us celebrate the special status accorded Quebec within the Canadian constitutional arrangement which you are so proud of. But in the same breath let us not also forget the promise that is part and parcel of that special arrangement, one that has been broken time and time again by the federal government.

2) Again quoting Mr. Ignatieff, Mr. Veniez writes:

"Quebec’s Charter of Rights—and its language laws—balance the rights of the majority, with equal rights for linguistic and other minorities."

They do no such thing.

Firstly, the "balance" between the "rights" of the majority -- as expressed through its National Assembly in Quebec City -- and the "equal rights for linguistic and other minorities" was the one struck in the "deal" of Confederation mentioned in point #1...not through a Charter of Rights that contains a "notwithstanding" clause (yes, Quebec's charter has one, too!).

There is no harm in having charters of rights; indeed, the more the merrier. But they have to work! And neither the Quebec nor the Canadian charters do.

I do believe that not only are Anglos starting to get a spine again, also more and more people are blogging and speaking up about it. You know what I have noticed over the past five months, is that the articles critical of the Caisse and ever of QC society are removed from the server, and only still exist on die-hard separatist sites. The Gazoo has been taken over on top, or bows like good slave to the Caisse de Depots when it gets legal threats (probably). Or there is a gutsy article section that politically incorrect articles are automatically purged - gutless editors are labelling them? No idea, trying to get inside the head of the Gazette censoring I have noticed - many of my old articles links no longer work (even google cached not there often).
So the proof of muzzeling is astounding, just noticing how they are trying to muzzel Nancy now, and isolating her for her co-workers because she spoke out regarding how our rights are seen as invisible, Bernard Landry's comments were totally inappropriate, that we are treated well by the govt. (and only have to wait 18-20 months for any resolution if they phrack up), and you are stepped on by a Blueneck in the office space.
It's just like Les Voleurs d'enfance meets Les Invasions Barbares, bureaucratic warfare is the norm here and vicitims or workplace bullying are shunned (treated worse than the perpetrator), and we get the worst of it as the minority, as well!

Hugh: The problem with your suggestion is it MAKES PERFECT SENSE. And it's something Anglo Quebecers, have been pleading for - for decades! We all know, being freaking STARVED OUT OF THE WORKFORCE - is freaking ILLEGAL. Tony: Believe it or not, since you've been gone it's gotten even WORSE. Canada's Dirty Ethnic Cleansing Secret in Quebeck - not only continues - but its reached a whole new level of contempt against Anglo Quebeckers.
I remember back in the days I first used the term 'ethnic cleansing' going on in Quebec - to Tommy - when he was still a newbie talk show host on AM 600; and he laced into me for daring to, as he said, "sully" what German & European Jews were forced to endure - by comparing what was happening to Anglos in Quebec. It was our first 'public fight on radio'. In a way, it was easy to understand, his reaction because, after all who could have fathomed something so grotesque could or would happen here in Montreal, in Canada, in North America. Like I said to him at the time... "What should we do - wait until they build ovens - to use the term?" Of course at the time I was labeled one of those Anglo Extremists. But as time went on - Quebec's 'ethnic cleansing' started to be called "SOFT ethnic cleansing". And all the while - the rest of Canada was kept - blithely unaware - of the truth - by our National Media and ALL our politicians. One would think that accusations of Canada allowing 'ethnic cleansing' of any kind - would be publicly vigorously denied and loudly and clearly - no? Nope - nothing of the sort. What it has continued to do - is IGNORE the accusations - because they're true of course and adding even more insult to injury - by PROMOTING it!!
Thank God for the internet. Because at last, the muzzling of this GROTESQUE (can't think of another adjective) TRUTH IS FINALLY, ABLE TO BE MADE PUBLIC.

As for Robert Scully - lol... I had no idea he even has a show - let alone one being filmed in Montreal! As for English names on CBC's English programming credits... hell... I'm surprised there are any!

Another example of this type of lunacy: Take a look at the number of English Management names & or staff - at The Montreal Gazette... or anywhere for that matter. Like I said: it's grotesque.
